About Jason Klass

Jason is an avid fly angler and backpacker. As a former fly fishing guide originally from Western New York, he moved to Colorado and became an early adopter of tenkara which perfectly suited the small, high altitude streams and lakes there. He has not fished a Western-style fly rod for trout since.

  1. The killer bug was most productive earlier in season, then later, end of July – September, a basic black sekasa kebari caught the trout!

  2. My most productive pattern has consistently been a toss up between the killer bug and the punk rock.

  3. Haven’t done much Tenkara yet, but its been an Olive Wully Bugger Sumer here.

Finally did a couple Kebari style ties this week.

In absolute numbers and sizes of fish, a #12 orange stimulator. But was in two really productive trips. Most consistent day-in, day-out: a #14 olive kebari with a natural emu hackle, twitched in the film.

  5. A toss-up between the Killer Bug (Jason made me an addict, something about the first one always being free…) and a black Sakasa Kebari.

  6. The Amano Kebari is our families go to fly, so far it has produced on all but one outing.

    Yay for contests! :-)

My son and I were reading your blog in Maine and it was one of the reasons we moved out here to Colorado. We unpacked, got a couple Tenkara rods and have no interest in going back east. If you see a guy and his 7 year old getting skunked with huge smiles, that’s us. If you see us giggling uncontrollably, we probably caught something. Thanks for the blog.

My most productive fly pattern this season has been a parachute adams dry or a Higa SOS nymph.

  11. Lynn David

I’ve only been able to do some warm water fishing. It’s been a toss-up between a scud patter (killer bug mostly) on some dought-lowered streams and a chartreuse-bodied wet fly with natural hackle for bluegill in ponds.

  12. Just starting to learn about this whole Tenkara thing. Figured I’d at least leave a comment because, hey…free prizes!

  13. jason, the salmon are in the creeks as we speak.i have used royal coachman for years and it has served me well.they also tend to hit on any streamer pattern.yesterday i saw a number of fish in the 12-15 pound range.i love my tenkara rod!!!

  14. Hands down, Killer bug.

  15. Easily my most productive fly this year has been a sz18 parachute adams. It is my go to fly and I always seem to catch fish with it.

Here in Scotland, the hardest thing is convincing the masses that Tenkara isn’t “just the same as using a whip.” (whips being something akin to your Crappie Poles in the States) This isn’t coarse fishing people!
I haven’t been able to get my own Tenkara set up yet, but I’ve followed the blogs for a long time – the streamlined, minimalist approach just sings to me. Not to mention that I now fish with Sakasa Kebari on my western style setup, to some success :-)

  17. Jason Klass

We have that same problem here in the states.

  18. Best five patterns this year (so far):

    #1 Killer Bug
    #2 Lite Brite Kebari
    #3 Black Foam Beetle
    #4 Hoppers
    #5 Ishigaki Kebari

  19. redband trout

    San Juan worm

    soft hackle

    Killer bug

    beetle/ant

Just made it up to Idaho from SoCal…can’t wait to try some of the saska kebari’s I tied!

Fishing Tenkara style is so easy & so much fun it should be outlawed. Just kidding! Having success in Rocky Mtn National Park in Colorado this summer and reading your blog got me so “hooked” on this new sport I’ve convinced a few friends to give it a try. When a 8 or 9 inch trout feels more like a 18 or 19 inch fish how can you go wrong?
If you are an “ULTRA LIGHT” fly fishing freak, then Tenkara is not just one answer, it’s the only answer. For Backpackers and Mountain hikers that constantly hike along small mountain streams wondering: “Is there any trout in there?” all they need to do is, pack along a Tenkara outfit and start enjoying that beautiful hike or backpack trip interspersed with the tug of a mountain stream trout on the end of your line.
I’m going on a Green River float trip later this month and also going to fish the Provo river here in Utah, but along with my 4,5 & switch western outfits, I’ll have my two Tenkara outfits. If all goes well you will hear about this when I return to cyber space.
Tight level lines & sharp Kebari hooks,
    Bob T.

I’ve been using essentially one tenkara fly pattern for the past year (in response to the question). I bought it from TenkaraUSA, but don’t know it’s name. I tied some more of them. It’s wet fly style with red and orange slender body and grizzly hackle. I’ve caught many trout on it in small and large streams/rivers and a few lakes. Naturally, I don’t believe the fly was the reason for catching the fish:)

    Jason,

    Gotta love fall giveaways!

Spent three hours with Misako Ishimura yesterday at the Fly Federations Conclave in Arkansas. I videoed her tying two flys, will edit and send to you.

Was wearing my Tenkara talk T-Shirt. Got lots of good comments about it!

  24. Jason Klass

That’s awesome Curtis! Thanks for the exposure and can’t wait to see the video.

  25. I am still new at this but I have caught a few panfish with a simple personal-tied kebari with a vulturine guineafowl hackle…white at the base, black in the middle, and the tips a light blue.

  26. Simplicity, that’s why I began fishing Tenkara. Fly patterns? The dry flies from Tenkara USA. Don’t remember the names. My focus is my connection to the river and its surroundings. That’s what I get from Tenkara. A good respite.

  27. I am very new to tenkara and have only gone Tenkara fishing once, hooked but did not land a small Rainbow trout with a small, unweighted western soft hackle.

  28. utah killer bug gets the job done

  29. Great Lakes Steelhead on Tenkara … why the #%$& not? A great tool for low, skinny water!

  30. Jason Hilbourne

    Best pattern this year-

    Blueberry Woolybugger
    PT nymph

  31. Right now my most successful imitation is a salmon bead from troutbeads.com. The 23 inch rainbow in my net will attest to that!

  32. Kill bug works for me

  33. Only been out once this year. I got a 12 incher on a trichoptera larva pattern. Also my first catch on a fly that I constructed!!!! wheeeeee!

  34. Read your comments all the time and they have saved me from making some big mistakes. Thanks

  35. Curtis – where are you from? Just curious since we (U.S.) usually say Caddis larva LOL!

Sorry, not a personal attack… It just made me laugh.

  36. Speaking of Caddis Larva – http://globalflyfisher.com/patterns/sharks-caddis-larva/

    SICK skills on this one!

  37. Great stuff Jason! Maybe this one is my chance :)
