New DIY Tenkara Forum & Gear Giveaway

If you’ve been wondering why I haven’t been posting lately, it’s because I’ve been working behind the scenes on a new project. I’m happy to announce that today, I’ve launched a new tenkara forum! Now before you say, “we already have too many tenkara forums”, let me point out that this forum is a little different. Rather than being a comprehensive forum, the Tenkara Talk Forum is completely focused on DIY tenkara!

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ve probably seen some changes over the years. So I thought it would be fun to give a little history on the site, and where it is now.

It’s with great sadness today that I announce my resignation from Tenkara USA. Some of you might know that about two months ago, I joined the Tenkara USA team to help out with marketing and content development. It was a great opportunity and of course I jumped at the chance but after getting into it, I found that it wasn’t feasible due to one factor that I overlooked: time.

I just made a TenkaraTalk wallpaper for my iPhone and am pretty happy with the way it turned out. I don’t know why anyone would want it, but I’m offering it for a free download (I guess I just like giving away free stuff). If you want to add it to your phone, here’s how…

Today, I got some good tenkara gear in the mail. But this time, I’m not hoarding it all for myself–it’s for you too! The first was a box of tenkara rods and lines generously donated by Tenkara USA for our tenkara rod loaner program. I’ll be adding these to the demo page this weekend. I’m excited to tell you that in addition to getting a couple more of one of the most popular rods (the Iwana), we’ll now also be able to loan out the premium Tenkara USA rod, the Ito (which happens to be my favorite Tenkara USA rod).

I’m happy to announce that TenkaraTalk has teamed up with The Fiberglass Manifesto to offer a new tenkara loaner rod program for those thinking about getting into tenkara. If you or anyone you know is curious about tenkara but want to try it before you buy it, now you can. One of the big problems in tenkara today is that many people dismiss it before they even try it. Tenkara rods are difficult to find locally so it’s not possible for most people to test cast one. We hope this program will give more people easier access to tenkara rods so they can try one out for themselves and experience that “ah-ha” moment most people do the first time they hold one in their hands.

What do you mean, “now”? Haven’t you been on YouTube for a while? Well, yes. I have been using my personal YouTube channel to upload tenkara videos for this blog. But in light of recent events, I thought it was best to create a separate TenkaraTalk channel. Let me explain…

I’ve started a new Facebook group for people in Colorado who like to Tenkara fish. It will be a place where we can share information about good places for Tenkara fishing in Colorado, upload pics and videos, and ask questions. Also, I plan to schedule regular Tenkara outings where we can meet up, fish together and try out different Tenkara rods and gear on the stream. These outings will be listed under the “Events” tab and I’m going to be scheduling the first one soon. Whether you’re an experienced Tenkara angler, a novice, or just thinking about trying Tenkara, I think this page will be a good resource. Join Colorado Tenkara Anglers here.
