2 Ridiculously Simple Hacks for your Fly Tying Vise

April 15, 20222 CommentsDIY & HacksBy Jason Klass

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but sometimes, the best innovations come from the humble junk drawer. Yesterday I was rummaging through (one of) mine and stumbled across two pieces of clutter that inspired me to improve my experience at the bench. They’re extremely simple, but worth a share. You can probably replicate them with what you already have laying around the house!

instead of a legal pad, use craft foam. Still low glare, but you can change the back ground through the range of craft foams on your fly bench if the tan is the wrong background. I am assuming you have 42 different colors of craft foam sitting around your bench like most fly tyers

Hi Dave, ha ha. Yes, I have bags of craft foam but they aren’t the colors I want (except black). Construction paper has more color options. I’m looking for that light blue and light green color. Plus, paper tends to be flat against the background plate. The foam kind of flares out.
