A long time ago, I wrote a post about five common tenkara myths and busted them. With all that’s been written about tenkara since then, I still find it amusing when people tweet statements like this:
Let’s carry that statement to its logical conclusion, shall we?
- 4 weight rods are a joke because you can’t land sailfish with them
- Weighted nymphs are a joke because they don’t float when fish are feeding on the surface
- Spey rods are a joke because they don’t fish well in small, brushy streams
Yep, tenkara is a joke. It won’t even wash your car for you either. 😉
Well said.
• Putters are such a joke – you can’t even hit a golf ball 50 yards using them!
• Placekickers are such a joke – they can’t cover wide receivers, and can’t defend the run when a guard pulls!
• Skill saws are such a joke – it’s so hard to perform open-heart surgery with them!
Jason, that guy is just an idiot. Tenkara is merely a tool, just like any other tool. It has a purpose, and a best use. For fishing in our typical mountain streams it’s nearly perfect. Who suggested tenkara was appropriate for salmon or saltwater anyway?
Jeez, think I’ll have a drink and go tie some kebaris – maybe we should create a “joker kebari” in his honor.
LOL, good analogies Mossy! I used to get offended by this stuff. Now I just find it a form of entertainment. Have a drink on me and go tie some great kebari. Cheers!
Well put Jason. I generally don’t really feel the need to respond to people who don’t “get” Tenkara but this guy is a real cretin.
If you don’t have any haters, then you’re doing something wrong… So Tenkara is obviously on the right track 🙂
Narrow-minded people really get me going. Well said.
I like joke.
Did Wesley just troll with a tenkara rod? 😉
LOL, if he did, he hooked me!
i like jokes. jokes are fun and effective, simple to learn, easy to pack in and they make me a better fly angler.
LOL, good one.
Like guys with sports cars, guys with 10 weight rods are naturally compensating for something?! Kinda like the pro bass fisherman on TV driving around with 300 hp outboards and horsing 2 pound bass into a boat with 30 pound braid!
I live in Western North Carolina, and have encountered many traditional fly fishers. Only ONE has been interested in checking out my Ito. Local outfitters look down their noses at me. I could care less what they think. I started fishing with Tenkara, and love every minute.
Charles, they’re only looking down their noses at you because they see tenkara as a threat to their business (and maybe skill set).
Just started in Jan. with Tenkara USA 13ft Iwana rod in NC. Loving it!!! Been out 6 times and caught fish every time and they haven’t stocked since November. One brown was 19″ and an 18″ bow. Most of the other fish were in the 10″ to 14 inch range. The Iwana 6.4 – 13″ was able to easily handle the larger fish. Wesley the joke is on you!!!
